Exhibition & Book Launch: “Stories of Our Lives: In Search of Queer Sanctuaries” at the Athens National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMΣΤ)
We are thrilled to present “Stories of Our Lives: In Search of Queer Sanctuaries” at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMΣΤ) in Athens, Greece, which will be opening on Friday 29th September 2023! Curated by Ioli Tzanetaki, this archive installation comprises photographs, illustrations, soundscapes (we’re thrilled to feature among these, a prayer for queer Africans by multi-disciplinary artists Adeola Aderemi, who also shared a podcast on ancestral veneration for our Queer Joy project!) and transcribed excerpts from countless intimate conversations. It aims to contextualize the queer expressions in Kenya that exist at the intersection of various discourses, such as law, religion, desire, nationhood, fantasy, language, aspirations, and cultural codes. These serve as a vital means of countering harmful and recurring narratives targeting wider queer, trans, and gender-diverse communities, both within Kenya and on a global scale.
Stories of Our Lives: In Search of Queer Sanctuaries also seeks to shed light on the inherent contradictions within queer life in Africa, ultimately fostering a contemporary comprehension of the country's complex lived realities. We are proud to also present our now 10-year-old film, “Stories of Our Lives”!
We’ll also be launching a long-awaited illustrated book of queer stories! “More Than Words” features illustrations from artists from around the world, including Royal Dunlap, Ahad Mahmood, Precious Narotso, Anthony Muisyo, Naddya Oluoch-Olunya, and Sajan Rai, and brings to life elements from the archive, as well as two electric new additions from Jim Chuchu and Dr. Akati Khasiani! Details on the book’s availability in print and online will be shared soon!
This indoor installation is our second exploration with the wonderful team at EMΣΤ! Our outdoor installation, 'Return to Sender,' has been showcased at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC) park since April. It was co-produced by both institutions and is ending its run in a few days, on Saturday, September 30, 2023. If you’re in Athens, do visit both of them whenever you can!
