New Work: Two Comics Out Today!
We are thrilled to have officially published (digitally!) 2 comic books. We chose and framed, and wrote the narrative skeletons of these stories, then invited some of our favourite illustrators, Joe Barasa and Daniel Muli (who was assisted by Ray Gicharu), to work with us to make them a reality. One is the story of Mekatilili wa Menza, and the other is of Wangu wa Makeri.
Here are the links to the comics, where we have also written a little introduction about each of these incredible women and their stories:
Mekatilili wa Menza: Freedom Fighter and Revolutionary
Wangu wa Makeri: Colonial Headman and Iron Lady
For this online launch, we have also recorded some thoughts about the process of making these comics! Our very own Njeri Gitungo, Akati Khasiani and Njoki Ngumi discuss why and how we decided to tell these two stories in particular, and the other narratives the Nest have been building that focus on women and to explore gender. Akati and Njeri also discuss Strictly Silk, the community experience they are lead artists and co-executive producers on, which explores secure nightlife, music/DJ performances, wider entertainment and curated festival offerings, centering joy and safety for women and non-binary folk of all outlooks and generations.
Have a listen below—and don’t forget to tell us on our socials (Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram) what you think about the comics!
