Post - Documenta Artist Talk: The Nest and Wajukuu Arts In Conversation
Our very own Noel Kasyoka and Njoki Ngumi will be in conversation with the wonderful Wajukuu Arts squad, speaking about all our featured art installations at the recently ended Documenta 15! We’ll share about what making, installing and presenting our work was like. We'll also discuss what we learned, what was wonderful and challenging, and the follow-on opportunities that came from this work, the lumbung concept and more!
We're honoured to be doing this with Wajukuu, who were among the 53 artist groups selected to create work for Documenta 15 this year. Wajukuu were also Africa's representatives to the Documenta 15 lumbung sub-team, as one of 9 core guides leading the creation of opportunities for collaborative work after Documenta across continents, genres and generations.
Wajukuu's contribution to Documenta 15 was an architectural installation named “Killing Fear of the Unknown”, drawn from the construction of Nairobi’s Mukuru slum and further inspired by the shape and layout of the Maasai manyatta (traditional house). It was built to usher movement through a corridor that opened out into an exhibition space lined with corrugated metal sheets, and was further resonant with sounds from the Lunga-Lunga neighbourhood where the group’s artists live and work. Inside the installation were different pieces contributed by several member artists, ranging from a documentary film, to several sculptures, paintings and smaller installations. Images of their beautiful and thought-provoking works can be found here.
