The Nest Collective at Documenta 15

We are so excited to announce that we have been selected as one of 53 artist groups for Documenta 15! Documenta is a world renowned quinquennial contemporary art exhibition that takes place in Kassel, Germany, and features artists from all continents whose work has had a significant influence on modern art. Documenta 15 is being curated by Jakarta-based collective ruangrupa, an Indonesian collective of artists and creatives, supported by the Documenta 15 Artistic Team. It will take place from June to September 2022, and is known as the Museum of 100 Days, because that is how long the exhibitions run.

This year is themed around the idea of lumbung, which is Indonesian for a collectively governed rice-barn, where the gathered harvest is stored for the common good of the community. This mode of shared resource therefore places high value on the principles of communality, equal sharing and friendship. The artist groups, which are mostly collectives, have formed nine smaller groups which are called mini-majelis (meaning council in Indonesian). These mini-majelis have been exchanging thoughts and ideas on sustainable models, resource sharing and much more.

It is an immense privilege being part of this wonderful group of people from all over the globe. We are especially humbled to be making a contribution at this time when the world is rethinking how and why communities are formed, and pushing the boundaries of what communities, collaboratives and collectives, large and small, can do together. As such, this is going to be a wonderful place to express many ideas, old and new! We cannot wait to share this all, learning and building as we go!
