The Future of Fashion in Africa: Sunny Dolat in Conversation
Our very own Sunny Dolat had an engaging interview with Lisa White of WGSN Insider, during the Design Indaba event in Capetown in February about the future of fashion in Africa. Sunny, together with Nisha Kanabar, the CEO and founder of Industrie Africa, spoke about their paths in working with African design and designers, and evolving global ideas on what Africa’s designs look like: “The global northern lens on African design aesthetics has always been fixated on tribal and ethnic elements,” Sunny says, as he refers to common continental stereotypes.
In the interview, Sunny shares highlights of fashion aesthetics across Africa, citing Katungulu Mwendwa, a Kenyan designer, whose designs focus on ‘function and utility’, and Haus of Stone from Zimbabwe, a fashion brand that values the intersection of fashion and spirituality’.
